In Samantha Smith’s Group, hundreds of people are working together to help Ukrainians who have been forced to leave their home country, to learn English and other languages. We are always on the lookout for volunteers, both teachers and coordinators.
Helping Together
As a teacher you will:
Teach group lessons or become a substitute teacher
Host speaking clubs or workshops (if that’s what you like to do)
Choose your own curriculum and exchange experiences with fellow teachers in Samantha
Be in charge of your own workload, i.e. the number of hours you can teach a week
If you are starting your teaching career, this is a great opportunity for you to gain much needed experience. We provide consistent support to our teachers. Should you need more practical support, we offer visiting lessons from other teachers and co-teaching with more experienced teachers. Join us!
As a coordinator you will
Help teachers with organisational matters and manage our databases
Be in charge of your own workload
Re-group students if their life circumstances change
Bridging teachers and students, coordinators are critical members of our team. This is a wonderful opportunity to help if you don’t feel like teaching.
Match teachers and students, form study groups, and help them figure out the best schedule
Please note
We require our volunteer teachers to have at least Upper-Intermediate (B2+) level of English and be ready to teach a group of at least four students.

For lower level students, we recommend having 60 or 90-minute lessons two times a week. For the levels B1 and higher, we ask to provide lessons at least once a week.

We ask our teachers to stay in touch and be able to reply to students or the coordinator at least once a day.

If your schedule does not allow for regular classes for a group, you can host speaking clubs, be a substitute teacher or help with methodological support. Please, let us know about your preferred ways of helping the project in your sign-up form.
Teacher
Coordinator
As a coordinator you don’t need to speak Russian and/or Ukrainian.
If you only speak English, you may become a coordinator for more advanced groups of students.

After you fill out an application form, we will contact you and talk you through our work process and how to start. In order to ensure the continuous learning process for our students, we ask our coordinators to start within a week following instructions from your mentor.

We ask our coordinators to stay in touch and be able to reply to their teachers within 24 hours.

We expect that our coordinators will launch and support at least five groups. Of course, we will be more than happy if you can set up more groups.
Our promise to our students is a 4-month’s course of language classes. In order to provide high-quality language support to our students, we kindly ask our volunteers to plan to stay with the project at least for the length of the one course, i.e. for four months.
